Introduction to the day as publicised before the event
The use of virtual environments has the potential to transform all
aspects of healthcare. Typical application areas include: training of
clinical procedures on virtual patients, treatment of phobias,
rehabilitation, patient education, telemedicine, and pre-operative
planning. There is much research ongoing in all of these areas, and
commercial applications are beginning to appear. This VVECC event
offer an opportunity to learn about the current state-of-the-art for
the use of virtual environments in medicine and healthcare, and
highlights many of the research issues and problems being addressed.
We are pleased to have attracted an international programme of speakers. The event will be of interest to both healthcare professionals, and computer scientists.

Virtual Environments in Social Phobia Treatment: A Case Study for Fear of Public Speaking
slides (in PowerPoint form - 2.1 MB)David M Clark is currently Professor of Psychology and Head of Department at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London. His research aims to identify the cognitive processes that maintain of anxiety disorders and to use this information to develop more effective psycholgical treatments. Over the last twenty years his team have developed novel, and effective, cognitive treatments for panic disorder, hypochondriasis, social phobia, and post traumatic stress disorder.
Mel Slater is Professor of Virtual Environments in the Department of Computer Science, University College London. His research includes the study of how to construct avatars that support effective communications in virtual environments. The application to social phobia studies is one of the testing grounds for this research.
